Traditional Khumra, is made out of special perfumes including pure Sandalwood oil, and dufra (onycha; roasted seashells lids) which are grinded on the sandal wood. The paste is made from the powdered dried ingredients that include Mahlet seeds, sandalwood powder, dufra and musk – all the ingredients used are of the highest quality. This paste is transferred to a bowl which is then smoked in a charcoal fire with pieces of sandalwood bakhoor on a low heat.
This process is repeated several times. Once the paste turns into a dark red colour after being smoked on the heat sandalwood oils are added and the smoked paste is combined with various authentic Parisian perfumes.
The preparation and making of Khumra is an important part of Sudanese wedding rituals. The preparations for the wedding perfumes start about a month before the wedding by the women of the bride’s relatives and friends and it is a skill that is passed on by through family members.
